Rachin Ravindra Returns To NZ Test Squad

Rachin Ravindra is gearing up for his home Test comeback after a two-year hiatus, securing a spot in the middle-order for the upcoming Test series against South Africa. The 24-year-old, recently honored as the ‘Emerging Player of the Year’ at the ICC awards, will fill the vacancy left by Henry Nicholls’ non-selection for the two Tests.

NZ Test Squad:

– Tim Southee (c)
– Tom Blundell
– Devon Conway
– Matt Henry
– Kyle Jamieson
– Tom Latham
– Daryl Mitchell
– Will O’Rourke* (for second Test only)
– Glenn Phillips
– Rachin Ravindra
– Mitchell Santner
– Neil Wagner
– Kane Williamson
– Will Young

Ravindra, with Test appearances in India and against Bangladesh in 2021 and 2022, respectively, earned his spot after a prolific World Cup campaign. Although not featured in the recent Bangladesh series, he remains a promising talent.

In the spin department, Ravindra, a left-arm spinner, joins Mitchell Santner as one of the key options for Captain Tim Southee, with Ajaz Patel overlooked. The squad also welcomes back Glenn Phillips, who is poised to play his first home Test since his debut in the 2019-20 season against Australia.

Selectors’ Insights:

Head coach Gary Stead expressed satisfaction with the diverse contributions during the recent Bangladesh series. He acknowledged the hard work of Glenn and Mitch in red ball cricket, emphasizing their ability to contribute across formats.

Stead praised Rachin Ravindra for his consistent contributions over the past year and highlighted his adaptability in different roles. The selectors introduced Canterbury fast bowler Will O’Rourke for the second Test, following his impressive performances in New Zealand ‘A’ and a recent ODI debut.

Injury Comebacks:

The squad marks the return of Tom Blundell, Kane Williamson, and Kyle Jamieson, who have successfully recovered from recent injury concerns. They are expected to be fit for the series opener starting on February 4 at the Bay Oval.

Stead acknowledged the honor of being involved in any Test match and anticipates stern challenges from the Proteas, emphasizing the significance of a successful Test season at home and abroad in the broader context of the cricketing calendar.

We wish Rachin all the best for the upcoming test series!
